What is Fastway?
Fastway is a bus-based public transport system that provides a comfortable, reliable and efficient alternative to the private car. Specially designed to speed past congestion hotspots, satellite based global positioning system (GPS) technology enables the Fastway system to give up-to-the-minute timetable information to passengers, track the location of vehicles to help maintain schedules and gain priority at traffic lights if the bus is running behind schedule.
Fastway buses are smart and easily recognisable and have well appointed interiors with comfortable individual seating and space for wheelchairs and pushchairs, with dual doors for easy access. CCTV cameras are installed for passenger safety and driver awareness.
The Route 10 service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every 10 minutes for most of the day. The Route 20 service, which begins operation on 27 August 2005, will run for 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, every 20 minutes for most of the day (see service timetable Adobe Acrobat PDF file).
Measures introduced for Fastway to achieve its aims:
- A new fleet of modern, high quality, low emission, low noise buses
- Dedicated bus lanes and guideways to avoid other traffic
- Modification of road junctions to include traffic light control
- Priority at junctions for buses over other traffic
- New halts
- Well planned phased-in routes between Crawley and Horley via Gatwick Airport and Manor Royal
- Improved journey times and reliability
- Real-time passenger information on board the buses and on halts
